Early Modern English came about from the 15th to 17th century as people became more concerned with language usage and developing a set standard. Several events contributed to this idea. The rise of printing led people to a desire a standardized way of spelling. This ultimately led to the publication of the first dictionary in 1604. This standardization also led people to notice regional and class differences in accent and dialect. Finally, while the 17th century onward is distinguished as Modern English, the essential difference between the two is vocabulary. This explains why American English and British English are still so similar.

早期的現代英語是從1517世紀出現的, 當人們開始更多牽涉到語言的使用和建立一套標準. 有一些事件促成了這個想法. 印刷的興起使人渴望將拼字標準化. 這終於造成了第一本字典在1604年被出版. 標準化也使人們注意到區域與階級在口音與方言上的差異. 最後, 雖然在17世紀之後被區分為現代英語, 主要兩者之間的差異是字彙. 這解釋了為何美式英語與英式英語仍然十分接近.
