In 1965, when administration in the University was shifted around a new regulation came out that allowed students, during a restricted time frame on specific days, to speak their minds and engage in political conversations in a calm, mature manner. This event caught the eye attention of the public and Berkeley became widely recognized as the site of the most intense pro civil rights university in the nation. Still today, the activism of these students from over 50 years ago is remembered at the “Free Speech Café” attached to the main undergraduate library.

Inside the café, you’ll find more than just students working away diligently on their computers but you’ll also note that every table in the café has a copy of a newspaper article written about the Free Speech Movement full of pictures and large bold slogans and reminders of just how important and influential this movement was to the feelings, attitudes and mentality of all Berkeley students.
