芙拉小姐指導蘿蔔哥英文已經兩年多了,她在家裡和她的父母親說希臘話(Greek),不過她父母的家鄉(hometown)不是希臘,而是塞浦路斯(Cyprus). 塞浦路斯是地中海(the Mediterranean Sea)中的島嶼(island), 位置接近現在的土耳其(Turkey), 塞浦路斯這個島目前被兩種民族(people)一分為二,東北角的土地由土耳其裔的政府控制,其餘的部分是說希臘話(Greek)的,稱為塞浦路斯共和國(Republic of Cyprus),就是芙拉的家鄉.

芙拉小姐大學主修英文,過了暑假就要進入紐約一帶以教育聞名的亨特學院(Hunter College)攻讀碩士學位(master’s degree),芙拉的志向是當一名高中英文老師,她有許多代課(substitute)的經驗.她認為現在的小孩受手機(cell phone)的影響很深,願意專心聽課參與學習的孩子變少了.

芙拉小姐住在紐約市(NYC)皇后區(Queens),經常搭地鐵(Subway)到曼哈頓(Manhattan)工作或上學.

今日單字與注解:

1.家鄉 hometown – Taiwan is my hometown. I’m from Taiwan. I come from Taiwan. 這三句意思差不多

2.地中海the Mediterranean Sea – 地中海料理 Mediterranean cuisine, me-di-ter-ran-nean 分成五節來發音,重音在第四節ran, 說the Mediterranean 也是地中海的意思

3.島嶼island – s 不發音,大家知道吧 . 那半島怎麼說? Peninsula, 如希臘所在的巴爾幹半島the Balkan Peninsula

4.希臘話Greek – 希臘人 Greek, 希臘這個國家Greece

5.碩士學位a master’s degree – 學士學位a bachelor's degree - 博士學位a doctoral degree 或 a PhD

6.代課老師substitute teacher, 當動詞I found someone to substitute for me.

7.手機cell phone – 很少聽到人說 mobile phone, 智慧手機smartphone, 家裡電話(市話) home phone, 公用電話 pay phone

8.地鐵subway – 地鐵站subway station, 我搭E號地鐵 I take the E train.

9.曼哈頓Manhattan  -紐約市 5個行政區之一, 是高樓林立的都會區, 著名景點有華爾街(Wall Street),帝國大廈(the Empire State Building), 時代廣場(Times Square), 第五大道(Fifth Avenue), 中央公園(Central Park)等. 另外兩個常聽到的行政區是皇后區(Queens)和布魯克林區(Brooklyn).
