Piazza Espana - Seville, Spain
Around lunchtime we stumbled upon a very cute, quaint rooftop restaurant with the greatest-tasting sangria I’ve ever had. And thank goodness it’s so easy to fly within Spain since we were able to get a full day in Seville and not have to fly back to Madrid until 9:30 PM that night. The next day, I decided to move onto Italy and continue my impromptu traveling in a country I know and love very much. My friend, Matt, returned home to the States to work for four more days but the next week, when he was given another 4 days off, we decided we’d meet in Rome and continue our European adventures part 2!

The End ()

Royal Palace - Madrid, Spain
What a beautiful city Madrid is! We enjoyed a full day exploring this regal city in perfect sunshine and warm summer temperatures in the mid-80s. The second day we thought it would be fun to take advantage of how inexpensive it is to travel within Spain via plane and took a cheap flight down to Seville. Now, I’ll say that I’m incredibly impartial to Italy and all things Italian but Seville makes it difficult for that claim to hold! It is the most charming, beautiful, intricate, and colorful city I’ve been to in a long, long time – and that’s saying something given by history of hopping on flights to Europe at a moment’s notice! We loved walking around the city’s cobblestone streets, gazing at the huge, majestic cathedral and the historical, regal Alcazar Palace.
Alcazar - Seville, Spain

Kate & Matt
Luckily, my friend, Matt, who also had some time off from any obligation or responsibility for four days was in Newark as well and we decided to travel together. By about 7 PM options were: Zurich, Switzerland; Madrid, Spain; Barcelona, Spain; Lisbon, Portugal; Munich, Germany; or London, England. It worked out really well that not only did my friend speak Spanish but he loves Spanish culture so who better to travel to Spain with than him? We used our Smart phones to book ourselves on the Madrid flight and within a few minutes we had our awaited ticket to Europe. A non-stress, mostly dormant 7-hour plane ride had us landing in Madrid in no time.

After arriving at the San Francisco airport, I realized one thing: I had to get to the East Coast before I could hop on a flight to Europe. Luckily the first leg of the journey, however, was the easiest. There were more than 10 options to either Boston, Newark, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. or New York. The San Francisco-Boston flight had me on the East Coast and ready for the next leg of spontaneous, unplanned travel. After realizing that more flights to Europe actually depart rather than from Newark than Boston, I hopped on a flight down to Newark and waited there for the majority of the day since it was still only about 8 AM and the Europe flights don’t depart until 4 PM or later. I enjoyed the day at the Newark Airport, eating airport food, lounging in the United Club area and eagerly looking forward to all the options that were in store for flying to Europe that night.

Trip to Madrid, Florence, Vicenza, Rome, Ferrara, Verona, Bologna and Padua in 11 days!
When my good friend, Matt, gifted me an airline “Buddy Pass” at the time I didn’t know the kind of adventure and spontaneity that would come with it! I had spent a grueling 10 weeks here in Berkeley taking an intensive Latin course that lasted the entire summer. The day after I finished this long, tiring course, I thought to myself “Why not take advantage of the Buddy Pass and add some adventure to life?!” The Buddy Pass is a magical tool in the travel world; with it, you can travel anywhere in the world on standby. In less than an hour, I’d decided I was going to go on a trip to Europe. I didn’t know yet where I wanted to go, how long I was going to stay there, or really what my plan was. I figured that with a passport, a few shirts, comfortable walking shoes, a debit card and a few Euro on hand, I’d at least get through the first few days OK without any real issue.
